Confirmation Program

Our St. John of the Cross Parish Program encompasses all aspects of Youth Ministry, which includes a well-rounded and traditionally Catholic experience of catechesis, service, social, and prayer and worship opportunities as part and parcel of this preparation.

Faith is something we live every day of our lives and we intend to focus on this process of living out the Gospel call Jesus extends to all of us:  Come follow me!  We give to you a sound doctrinal and spiritual base as we prepare you to live your life as an adult Catholic in today’s Church.

Service through Ministry

Serving our Parish Community The document published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops,
“Renewing the Vision,” describes the framework for Catholic Youth Ministry. In this document, the Catholic Bishops highlight a ministry of Justice and Service as essential to our mission as Catholic Christians. Our Confirmation program offers all teenagers an opportunity to serve others through opportunities such as St. Vincent de Paul Shelter, the Apple Harvest Festival, St. Patrick’s Day Senior Bingo, Collection of personal care kit items, and sandwich making.

Liturgical Ministry Perhaps one of the most transformational parts of our faith life as Catholics is the united celebration of the Mass every Sunday.  We encourage our teenagers preparing for Confirmation to serve our parishioners through serving as altar servers, cross bearers, ushers, choir members and lectors. These ministries help unite the importance of the Mass with a ministry of service to our church.

Confirmation Retreat
Each year, our Confirmation candidates must participate in our Confirmation retreat. This retreat is an excellent opportunity for our teens to grow deeper in faith and learn more about themselves and their relationship with God
 and their peers.
Due to the amount of preparation and manpower required to facilitate the retreat, there is no substitute activity to fulfill this requirement. We give at least 6 months advance notice so that families can make appropriate arrangements for their teen to be available for this retreat. While we recognize there are other activities and pressures that teens are involved with over the course of the school year, teens must make priorities in their lives for this retreat.  The retreat is held at the Holy Family Retreat Center in West Hartford.

Confirmation Interview

Confirmation Interviews are held with the Pastor, the Deacon and the Director of .Religious Education at the end of the Confirmation process to assess the needs and readiness of the Confirmation candidates for the sacrament.
This is an opportunity for our pastor to meet with our Confirmation candidates and ensure that our Confirmation process is meeting the needs of our candidates. It is also a great opportunity for candidates to ask specific information about our faith they may have questions or need clarification about.
At the time of the interview, all Confirmation candidates must write a letter to the Pastor requesting the Sacrament of Confirmation. The letter should contain the following information:
  • Introduction of yourself (Background information, Age, School, etc.)
  • Why you’ve decided to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
  • What saint you have chosen for your Confirmation name and why.
Letters should be typed and put in an envelope addressed to: Father Dennis.
