From the Desk of Father Dennis

Tell Your Heart to Beat Again

Today’s title refers to the eyewitness account given by a young priest in his parish.

The story is told that the young priest befriended an eminent heart surgeon, and, after some time, asked the doctor if he would allow  him into the medical gallery during a surgery.

Armed with a newfound confidence surrounded by the medical students, Father came to the day of the surgery.  Father marveled at all the technology and moving parts.  During the surgery, something went wrong, and the patient’s heart was not beating.  Everyone began to panic as the patient was still.  Everyone, that is, except the surgeon.

The Doctor calmly bent down and whispered into the woman’s ear: “Tell your heart to beat again .”  Sure enough, the woman’s heart began to beat and she was fine again!

There is a popular song by Christian composer Danny Gokey with this title which captures the energy and freedom of this heart pounding incident (pun intended).  It touches on similar themes of today’s “Good Shepherd Sunday.”  Jesus, the Divine Physician, utters the saving words and effects the saving action.

Jesus’ promise is clear and paramount:

“I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”

Let Jesus tell us that our hearts are alive only when they beat in unison with His.

United in the Good Shepherd,

Reverend Dennis J. Vincenzo
