From the Desk of Father Dennis

From Pope Francis Himself

We are not God.

The earth was here before us and it has been given to us.

 -Laudato Si

These beautiful words, for Pope Francis’ latest encyclical on the preciousness of the environment, beckon us to grasp more fully the precious gift of the world (and universe) we inhabit. It is an accessible work, only intermittently delving into some deeper areas of theology.

Believe it or not, I was thinking of Laudato Si in the context of this coming week, only two weeks until Easter. Why? you might ask.

You see, this week marks the last week of CCD classes for Grades 1-8. Usually unremarkable, save for one class on Tuesday evening with all the 8th graders. They gather, under the direction of Mrs. King and their teachers. They listen to me, along with 2-3 peer ministers, to give them an orientation to “what’s next?”; the next time they gather as a class they will be 9th graders in the Confirmation program.

Just like the Holy Father’s words above about the earth being given to us, these precious young adults (soon they will be called that) will get to focus on their faith given to them in Baptism. Their parents (and grandparents) brought them to the font because they love their faith; the Priest or Deacon acts in the name of the Church to give the new Christian a gift like none other.

The last day of class (for all students) for the 8th graders, when they listen to me and their faith-filled peers, is a time to pause. This means looking back on their years of CCD (Don’t forget to thank your teachers – that’s an order!) and leaving the textbooks behind as they step across the threshold. Some of them have been in this process since Children’s Liturgy of the Word.

For the past six years, I have visited with the 8th grade. I marvel at their enthusiasm and burgeoning love for their faith. It only grows stronger culminating in their Confirmation Day standing before the Bishop.

Please pray for all of our CCD students, their patient teachers, their loving parents, and Mrs. King and Mrs. Beauvais who guide them all.

In the love of Christ,

Rev. Dennis J. Vincenzo
