Year of Mercy Concludes

Next week, on November 20, the Solemnity of Christ the King, the Year of Mercy concludes.  Let’s take the Holy Father’s words to heart: “God’s mercy is great, forgiving us by caressing us.  The steadfast love of God never ceases; His mercies never come to an end.  They are new every morning.”

Pope Francis lays out how we should approach this transition: a.) We must first acknowledge that we have done many things wrong: we are sinners!  With this attitude of repentance, we will be more capable of being merciful, because we are sinners!  With this attitude of repentance, we will be more capable of being merciful, because we will feel God’s mercy for us; b.) To become merciful, we need an openness to expanding our hearts.

Whatever your prayer has been like during the Year of Mercy, the conclusion of this Jubilee Year offers us opportunities to explore that the “way of mercy is the way of life.  A Christian must necessarily be merciful, because this is the center of the Gospel.  Mercy overcomes every wall, every barrier, and leads us always to seek the face of the other — of the person.”
Pope Francis offers us a beautiful reflection, and gives us food for thought and prayer.
Let us pray for each other, and pray for our country, and for our new President-elect.

Yours in Christ’s peace,

Reverend Dennis J. Vincenzo
