Baptized Into Grace

This past Wednesday, October 4 (the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi), I celebrated the anniversary of my Baptism. I was baptized fifty-two years ago in my home parish, St. Augustine, in the south end of Hartford. I received all of my Sacraments there, and that is where I celebrated my First Mass in 1991. This beautiful church has always had a Sacramental ring to it, where so many of my family’s significant spiritual events took place.

I spent Wednesday praying and thinking about my Baptism, the great gift of salvation in and union with Christ. My parents chose to bring me to the font, to pass along the faith that had been handed down through their parents. My mother texted me and called me, to congratulate me, and I am grateful that someone remembered.

Why not talk to your children/grandchildren about their Baptism? Show them the pictures, talk about the day, and show them the candle and white garment as symbols of what the Sacrament is about. You may want to light the candle on the anniversary, to celebrate a “birthday” in Christ. It is no doubt a foundational event, which impacts our faith life each day. Because most children are baptized as infants, you have to fill in the story for your children/grandchildren.

Our faith is passed along through living, breathing human beings. Why not do your part to make the Baptism come alive for the next generation?

United in Christ,

Reverend Dennis J. Vincenzo
