                                                                        Lent Is Upon Us

Just a few days ago we celebrated Ash Wednesday by the mark of the cross on our foreheads.  Really, it was a recognition that we are all dust and unto dust we shall return.  The reality of sin in our lives was writ large in that smudge on our forehead.  In the mystery of the Cross of Jesus, we die to sin and inherit eternal life.  What is your Lent going to be about?  Are we “giving up” sweets, coffee, cigarettes, some other pleasure?  Are we “adding on” our Parish Mission, extra prayer, daily Mass, Bible or other spiritual reading, Rosary, Little Black Book,  or signing up for the Best Lent Ever (DynamicCatholic.com/BestLentEver) to have spiritual clips sent to our e-mail every day?  Are we trying to practice the Corporal Works of Mercy by feeding the hungry and helping the homeless?

Share with someone what you are doing; that way you are accountable to another believer.  Help your children and grandchildren with age-appropriate suggestions.  Share your faith journey – ask at the dinner table: “Lent is upon us – what are you doing?”  Feel free to share your story.

Lent is not about forty days of endurance, it is about forty days of growth.  What is the Lord inviting you to in order to deepen your relationship with Him?

Our Parish Mission is soon upon us – it begins next week, Sunday Feb. 21st from 3-5 p.m.  It continues on Feb. 22nd and 23rd at 7 p.m.  Confessions will be heard on Monday and Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m.  I will be joined in presenting the Mission by Father Joseph Keough, former assistant to Msgr. Regan, now Pastor of St. Joseph and St. Peter in New Britain.  Join us!

The title of the Mission is “Growing in Faith During the Year of Mercy”.  Lent is upon us – can it be a time of growth?  The answer is yes – that is the Lord’s desire.

                                                                                                                Praying for each other,

                                                                                    Reverend Dennis J. Vincenzo
