Joy: A Way of Life

The Third Sunday of Advent is know as Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin which means “Rejoice!” Quite simply, we Rejoice because the celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth is near. The vestments change to rose color, as does the third candle on the wreath (some people call it pink, but more correctly it is rose).
The second reading from Paul’s letter to the Philippians is shouting from the housetops: “Rejoice in the Lord always, I say it again: rejoice!” This Entrance Antiphon is the root of the Gaudete word.
Joy is a way of life, not just a word which floats by once a year. Think of this, easy to remember:

J esus is first
` O thers are second
Y ou are third

How simple is this? Simple to read, to be sure, but harder to live.
With God’s grace, we enter into the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. We put Jesus, the Face of God’s Mercy first, others second, and ourselves third. Mercy springs from the very Heart of God. Putting Jesus first is the key to happiness and Joy.
Let us pray for each other during this Year of Mercy. I will offer a Mass each week for your intentions, as is the responsibility of the Pastor. Let us Rejoice, and be instruments of Mercy toward each other.

In the Joy of Christ,
Rev. Dennis J. Vincenzo
