12/06/2015 Pastor’s Message

On this Second Sunday of Advent, St. John the Baptist appears in the beautiful Gospel from St. Luke. He calls for us to “make straight the paths” in earnest preparation for the coming of the Lord. In my homily last week, I spoke of the two comings of Christ: 1.) His first, the Incarnation, when Jesus became fully human and was born in the womb of a Virgin; 2.) His second, when He will arrive at the end of time in the culmination of all human history.

John the Baptist calls us to be ready when He comes, when every valley shall be filled. This means our hearts need to be ready – heed the voice of the Baptist. What areas of our lives need to be straightened? What things need to be smoothed?

We should all take as much care of our spiritual lives as all of our other preparations (baking cookies, running frenetically to stores to buy that perfect gift, addressing cards and decorating). Doesn’t the Lord deserve hearts that are spiritually ready? Take some time this Advent to prepare – spend a few extra minutes in prayer, light the Advent wreath in your home, talk to your children about faith. Listen to them.

There is a voice crying out – let us listen together.

Advent joy,

Rev. Dennis J. Vincenzo
