An Advent of Justice

We are beginning our new liturgical year with the First Sunday of Advent today. Our thoughts and hearts are focused on getting ready for the celebration of the Incarnation, the Day of Christmas. One scholar has reflected on this new season: “In our Advent celebrations, we find a strong emphasis on issues of justice and peace. [Today], we are called to prepare for the Second Coming of the Lord (in Greek, parousia; in Latin, adventus) and to celebrate Christ’s entry into our lives by living as men, women, and children of justice who work for a more peaceful world. And yet, we know that the commercial world has come to dominate our Advent preparations, causing us at times to miss the real wealth that Advent holds forth for those who immerse themselves in its… celebrations.” (Coffey, et al)

Take some time during this Extraordinary Year of Mercy to reflect on the Person of Jesus Christ and His merciful love. You may want to take home a Little Blue Book for Advent meditation (one per family, please). Your Advent will be enriched by attention to both of these.

Let us continue to pray for one another.

Happy Thanksgiving,
