I Belong to Him

Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going? I am nothing. Everything I possess, my being, life, understanding, will, and memory – all were given me by God, so all belong to Him.

Saint John XXIII

St. John XXIII reigned as Pope from 1958 until 1963; he opened the Church to the Second Vatican Council. In calling Vatican II, he invited the Holy Spirit to reshape the Church, its liturgy, and to situate the Church in the modern world.

He was a deeply spiritual man, who is purported to have prayed at night before he went to sleep: ‘It’s your Church, Lord, I am going to bed.’ Think about the quote from him above. It puts into perspective a certain detachment, a radical reliance upon God.

Today’s Gospel is the oft-quoted rich young man account from Mark’s Gospel. His “face fell” because the Lord asked him for the ultimate detachment, that of his worldly goods. He “went away sad,” indeed because his possessions possessed him.

All we have and are belongs to God. Can we, like St. John XXIII, recognize that?

United in Hope,

Rev. Dennis J. Vincenzo
