Peter and Paul: Gardeners for the Kingdom

This day has been made holy by the passion of the blessed Apostles, Peter and Paul. We are, therefore, not talking about some obscure martyrs. For their voice has gone forth to all the world, and to the ends of the earth their message. These martyrs realized what they taught: they pursued justice, they confessed the truth, they died for it.
St. Augustine, bishop

Last Saturday, I was enjoying my coffee on the patio outside the cottage, and suddenly cars began to pull up. The cars carried gardeners, who arrived for the planting of the parish garden. The proceeds of the garden will be used to feed the poor in the greater Waterbury area. These kind folks gave up several hours on a precious Saturday to plant, to water, and to hope.

Gardening is about hope, the hope that comes from TLC, from sweat, and resolve. I couldn’t help but think that Saints Peter and Paul are like those gardeners, preaching the Gospel, planting on rich soil. Peter preached in the early Church, to the earliest Christians, many of whom were converts from Judaism. Paul is known as the Apostle to the Gentiles, those not born as Jews. Together, they were the greatest tag team the Church has ever known, gardeners for the Kingdom. In the power of the Holy Spirit, they trusted, hoped, and longed for a rich harvest, and what a harvest it
was! Let us praise God for their example.

Watching it grow,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
