06/15/14 Pastor’s Message

In her voyage across the ocean of this world, the Church is like a great ship being pounded by the waves of life’s different stresses. Our duty is not to abandon ship but to keep her on her course.
St. Boniface, 8th century

The martyr Boniface spent his life as a reformer of the Church, and as a founder of monasteries in northern Germany. He knew intimately that the Church is divine, founded by God to help us unto salvation. How many people, here in our own town and throughout these United States, have abandoned ship? I am not referring to the home bound or ill who can no longer get to Mass, but those who choose sporting events over Mass. They are directly teaching their children that Mass is not important, or just another thing on a list, equal to soccer, baseball, or some other sport.

If all the children in our religious education program and at least one parent attended Mass on Sundays, we would not be able to reduce the Mass schedule for the summer. Indeed, we would have
to build a new church! Think about it.

On the ship together,
