From Fr. Dennis’ Desk

Alma Mater

Here we are, turning another calendar page, coming into May and pausing for Mother’s Day.  What a great day to honor our mothers, and to remember those who have gone before us.  All of the Masses this weekend are offered for all mothers, living and deceased.

This past week I attended my high school reunion, so I naturally thought of alma mater, from the Latin for “nourishing (caring) mother.”  I thought what a wonderful image to use to remember our mothers, who nourished us and nurtured us.  These words need not only refer to the school from which we graduated, but they might capture the role of our mothers in our lives.

Some reading this will recall unhappy memories of childhood due to estrangement, rancor, or substance abuse.  However, it is never too late to pray for healing of memories.  Hurt and anger take a mighty toll on us.

We should never forget to pray today for mothers who have lost children, whether through miscarriage or later in life.  A broken heart takes a very long time to heal, and we stand with those mothers ( and fathers) in their struggle .

Visit Mom today, or call or FaceTime or Skype.  Tell her you love her, the original and most revered alma mater.

With gratitude,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
