Two New Saints;
Popes for the People

It is estimated that over two million people will gather in Rome today, in St. Peter’s Square and spilling over where anyone can find a place to stand.  Their mission?  To celebrate the canonization of St. John XXIII and St. John Paul II.  These two popes had an historic impact on the Church in the second half of the twentieth century and, in the case of St. John Paul II, into the twenty-first.

St. John XXIII called the Second Vatican Council, gathering all of the world’s bishops into an ecumenical council in the early 1960’s.  It cannot be overstated the impact that Vatican II had on the Church, as the Council followed the promptings of the Holy Spirit and reformed the liturgy of the Church and reshaped how the Church related to the modern world.  There was no aspect of the Church’s life that is left untouched, and no aspect of its mission unexamined.  St. John XXIII was elected when he was much older, a caretaker pope, who was chosen as a “seat warmer” who would quietly take care of business and then fade into obscurity.  The Holy Spirit had other plans!  St. John XXIII opened the windows (aggiornamento) into a new Church!

St. John Paul II was elected in 1978, the year of three popes (can you name them? Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul I, and of course Pope John Paul II).  He came from Poland, and brought a vigor and spiritual depth to his papacy.  This young, vibrant pope reached out to the people and connected immediately with them.  From the fall of Communism in Poland, he became a huge figure on the world stage.

Praise God for these two incredible giants, two saintly popes, two popes who are now saints!

St. John XXIII and St. John Paul II – pray for us!!!

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
