From Fr. Dennis’ Desk

How’m I Doin’?

The late mayor of New York City, Ed Koch, mayor from 1978 to 1989, was  a fixture on the scene for decades.  During his whole political career, he was fond of saying – ‘How’m I doin’?’  He would ride the subways, stand on street corners, approach workers at construction sites, a coffee shop or in line for a hot dog.  Political opponents criticized him, but he maintained he genuinely wanted to know.
Maybe we can ask ourselves this catchy question, and apply it to our Lenten journey.  ‘How’m I doin’ can become a mantra for us.  We can ask ourselves this straightforward question, and see the honest answer:

Prayer:  Do I set aside time each day or at least each week to commune with God?  Am I attentive to the Scriptures, the Rosary, or Stations of the Cross?  How has my prayer enriched me each and every day?  Have I set aside time for me and my family to go to Confession in preparation for Easter?
Fasting:  Have I followed the Church’s requirements?  See the bottom of the next page.
Almsgiving:  Do I share what I have with the poor?  Have I given of my time for those in need?  Do I teach my children to share what they have with the poor?

There’s still time – this is the fourth Sunday of Lent.  Please note the Confession schedule at the bottom of this page.  Look in the mirror—ask yourself:  ‘How’m I doin’?’ Then let Jesus know.  He’s waiting.
