Living Water

Already we arrive at the 3rd Sunday of Lent, having reflected on Jesus’ fasting and temptation in the desert, and on the Transfiguration, high atop Mount Tabor.  Today’s Gospel scene is of the Samaritan woman at the well as she encounters Jesus, and her life is changed forever.  We are invited to reflect on the gift of our own Baptism: “Do we really know the gift we have been given?  Do we know, are we in a personal relationship with Jesus, who is the giver of life?  Today’s account…calls…all of us who will renew our baptismal vows at the Easter Vigil, to drink freely from the water that Jesus gives.  It is the fountain of eternal life” [Sourcebook, LTP, 2014].

This Living Water is the gift of Jesus Himself as we are sanctified in Baptism.  We are given new life! Pray with the Samaritan woman today, who gradually understands more deeply Christ’s precious gift.

Our Lenten journey is to prepare our hearts for the Easter mystery, the reality that we are baptized into Christ’s Resurrection.  May our prayer this week help us to grow ever closer to Christ.

In Christ’s peace,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
