Prevent Corrosion

I heard recently of a public hearing at the State Capitol regarding the material used to treat the roads in the winter.  Many people were complaining because they said the current mixture causes corrosion in cars and trucks.  They displayed examples of corroded undercarriages and rotted out frames.  They asked the public safety committee to put in an additive as a rust inhibitor.  Opponents of adding a rust inhibitor say that the combination is not as effective as without the additive.  The debate raged on, and was finally tabled for another time.  The wheels of government turn slowly.

I was thinking of our spiritual lives, and the steps we take to combat corrosion. What do we need to put in, especially during Lent, to keep our spiritual lives holy?  Could it be more attention to the Sunday Eucharist, by reading the readings before going to church? Perhaps it’s spiritual reading, picking up some of the material we wanted to ‘get around to’ read, such as Catholic classics.  Maybe it’s helping out someone in need by donating to a food pantry, or offering time to serve at a soup kitchen.  Or it could be setting aside some prayer time each day (with the Little Black Book).

Our faith can be corroded by many factors.  This Lent could be a time to turn and face our sinfulness.  The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is offered every Monday evening from 6-7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 3-4 p.m. (or by appointment).

Let’s combat spiritual corrosion together.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
