From Fr. Dennis’ Desk

This ‘n That

As I write this, it is the eve of the President’s State of the Union address.  I heard many of the ‘talking heads’ on television speak of the President’s approval ratings, and how he is approaching his sixth State of the Union in a weakened state.  By the time you read this, you will have heard the speech and can make your own judgment.

Early in 2013, we held a series of four parish meetings to gauge the parishioners’ opinions on many issues.  Recall that there were three topics:  spiritual report, financial report, and  a future planning aspect that included consultation on the parish assets.  We also mailed a parish assessment tool (and made copies available) to every registered household.  We received approximately 10% of them back, which experts tell us is a healthy response.

Over the months that followed, a professional in the field who donated his time carefully collated the assessment tool.  An ad hoc committee appointed by the Parish Council has studied the results.  The committee is made up of Dr. Joseph DeMayo, Ron Vitarelli, and Dave Williams (chair).  Joe Connolly offered advice and support to the project.  They have carefully prepared a summary of each of the questions, and analyzed their trends.  I am pleased to announce that the study is nearly complete.

Soon, the results of the assessment will be posted on our website.  The ad hoc committee will presents its findings to the Parish Council at the next meeting, and then written reports (commentary and summaries) will closely follow on the website.  We are also working on ways to communicate the information to those who do not have access to the internet, most likely by means of the weekly bulletin.

This will provide the framework for this year’s annual report.  Every pastor is required by canon law (Church law) to provide a report about the parish’s spiritual and financial health, much as the Constitution demands of a president.  This will be done later this month, as soon as the Finance Council closes out 2013’s book and looks ahead to the budget for 2014.

I thank you for your patience, and I hope that the careful attention to your opinions and outlook will pay off in planning for the Parish Council and the Finance Council and in informing the vision that we will carry into the future.

With gratitude in the Lord,

Fr.  Dennis J. Vincenzo
