Never Alone

Therefore, will I trust you always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.  I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.—Thomas Merton

Thomas Merton (1915-1968) was a mystic and a prolific writer who shaped much of the spirituality of the 20th century.  He was born an Anglican, but in 1938 he became a Catholic.  He felt called to the priesthood and was ordained in 1948; the Trappist monastery beckoned and he joined the order and lived and wrote from Gethsemane Abbey in Kentucky.  He wrote over 70 books, mostly on spirituality and social justice.  He is remembered for his autobiography, Seven Storey Mountain (1948), which tells of his great spiritual awakening in spite of his early spiritual wanderings.  It is a wonderful, moving book, especially for a young man considering priesthood or a young woman discerning religious life.

Why not download Seven Storey Mountain on your tablet or phone?  It is a great read.  At the very least, Google Thomas Merton quotes and read as many as you can.  Any of his books are a goldmine of spiritual insights and moving prose (and some poetry).  The library might carry some of his books, or they can certainly get them through interlibrary loan.

We are never alone—Jesus is at our side to comfort, console, and bless us.  This Year of Faith is a perfect opportunity to be renewed.  Let Thomas Merton help.

With Jesus ever present,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
