Help From Our Friends

This is the heading for an article in the February 2012 issue of America  magazine.  The author reports on a recent study by a sociologist who showed that those individuals with many friendships in a Faith Community show a higher level of religiosity.  The study also showed that church-based friendships had greater impact on individuals’ religious behavior than on their beliefs.  Of 1,600 adults surveyed, 42 percent had “a few” friends who attended their church, while 32 percent said “none”.

The author’s conclusion is that this “study serves as a reminder that faith communities must foster a welcoming environment.  Building friendships within a parish can help Catholics feel supported living out their Faith in the world, and it could help heal divisions within the church as well.”

I marvel at the strong bonds so many people have with their friends in the parish.  I am also perplexed when I see people who seem so alone, and no one reaches out to them.  Some people arrive late, and leave right after Communion—what are they missing out on?

Maybe we can extend a hand, introduce ourselves and our children, and—voila!—we’re no longer sitting next to strangers.

Jesus is our Life,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
