Take Time

I recently heard a report on NPR by Scott Simon, longtime radio host for several programs.  Scott chronicled his relationship with his mother, Patricia, who recently passed away at 84.  The focus of the report was his mother’s final days in intensive care as he kept vigil by her bedside (her “deathbed,” he said, but how he prayed she would recover!).

One of the last conversations they had was when she became lucid and, just hours before her death, they spoke of old times through tears and laughter.

Patricia gave him solid advice:  “always take time for people in their 80’s.”  Here is his mother slipping away, and she offers such beautiful advice.  How many of us are blessed with parents, grandparents, or other relatives in their 80’s and 90’s?  Do we truly take time to listen, to cherish, to celebrate them?  Do we listen to their stories, savor their lives, and so much appreciate them?

This past July 17th would have been my grandmother Ruth’s 100th birthday.  She died too young, just weeks before my priesthood ordination.  How much I wish I could spend time, take time, to see her or Poppa Mike again and hear their stories.

If you still are blessed with parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents, take time with them, and let the symphony of their lives enhance yours.

Take time.  You’ll be glad you did.

In Christ’s love,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
