From Fr. Dennis’ Desk

I recently heard from an old friend who is a nine year breast cancer survivor.  She told me that testing had detected the cancer spread to other parts of her body.  I was stunned, and I later visited her in the hospital. We prayed together, and she told me that she would soon begin a new regimen of treatment, many of which involved medication which did not exist five years ago. I came across this prayer which helped me, and I hope it might help you, too.

A prayer of those living with breast cancer . . .

Lord God,

Even before I was born, you knit me together in my mother’s womb. Every cell of my body you know, and every inch of my skin you yourself shaped onto my flesh and bones. Not a single hair on my head goes uncounted, and no tears escape your gaze. So I know you can make me whole again. From the depths of this disease, I cry out to you, O God, for I am convinced that neither cancer, nor tumor, nor chemo, nor radiation, nor fear, nor doubt, nor isolation, nor pain will separate me from your love and the wonder of the person you created me to be. From my first breath, you made me holy. Fashion  me again with your Spirit, and fill this sacred and broken body with new life, that every breath to my last may proclaim your mighty and wondrous deeds.  Amen.

Yours in the hope of Christ,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
