REAL PRESENCE:  Our Salvation

As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, we remember one of the key building blocks of our faith.  It is Jesus Christ’s Body and Blood which is Nourishment for our journey unto eternal life.  There can be no mistake: our God loves us so much that He does not want us to wander hungry and thirsty through life; He offers us the Gift of new life through the Eucharist.

Each and every time we celebrate Eucharist, we partake of the Real Presence– Jesus Christ is truly present, Body, Soul, and Divinity.  There has been much written of late that a large number of Catholics no longer believe in the Real Presence.  It has eroded to the point many believe it is a “symbol” or “reminder” of Christ.  When Jesus speaks of Himself as the Bread of Life, He is not using a figure of speech, but rather speaking of His very identity.

Maybe we can use this day to become renewed in our appreciation of the Body and Blood of Christ, to be drawn into the reality of so great a gift.

Just about two weeks ago, Father John Blackhall passed away. He had been retired for several years, but during his active ministry he served in Waterbury for forty-six years.  Father served for many years among Hispanic Catholics at St. Cecilia Church, and later at Sacred Heart. St. John of the Cross cultivated special relationships with both churches  over the years.  I think of Father Blackhall as a pioneer, the first to begin Hispanic ministry in Waterbury.  I called him a friend, who loved the Eucharist deeply.  He knew the transformative power of the Eucharist.  May he rest in peace–he will be missed

Yours sincerely in the Risen One,
