From Fr. Dennis’ Desk

The Second Sunday of Easter, also known as Divine Mercy Sunday, introduces us to Thomas the Apostle, whose name has entered our language: Doubting Thomas. We hear the account in today’s Gospel of the Apostles and disciples who locked themselves in the Upper Room out of fear. Thomas will not believe in the Resurrection until he can see for himself, and probe the Lord’s wounds.

Thomas, it seems to me, can serve as a role model for us, especially among young people (middle school age all the way to college), and for some adults as well. You see, Thomas was not expelled from the community because of his doubts. He was embraced and supported, and kept a part of the group, which can stand with him.

The Year of Faith, about which we have been hearing a great deal, emphasizes that our faith is a precious gift from God, a divine birthright, if you will. It is O.K. to doubt, to question, and to wonder, to seek God with a sincere heart. I meet people all the time who wonder where God is, or why God did not intervene in the way they wanted. Some question God’s existence at all. Like Thomas, these people are a precious part of the community, and our Lord is patient with them on every level.

Perhaps someone in your family is struggling now. Invite them to pray with Doubting Thomas, so as to exclaim “My Lord and my God!”

In the Risen Christ,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
