From Fr. Dennis’ Desk

Today’s Gospel offers the account of the Temptation in the desert, with the Lord spending forty days confronting the devil. Our Lenten journey mirrors His, as we embark on a potentially life-changing season. What do I need to do to make my Lent fruitful this year? Last week’s Gospel, which we did not hear because Blizzard Charlotte had other plans, saw Jesus’ invitation to His disciples to “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Those fisherman knew their trade, knew the lake like the proverbial back of their hand.

Yet it is Jesus’ invitation to go deeper which transforms their lives. They will never be the same again! The haul of fish they caught filled their nets to overflowing. Can we allow ourselves to be led by the Spirit this Lent, to listen the promptings which call us deeper?

On Ash Wednesday, we handed out the Little Black Books (which were supposed to be in your hands last week). Please use them, only six minutes a day, with your whole family. If you did not get one on Wednesday, please ask an usher. We also offered a flyer with suggestions how to “do Lent” this year. Much of it is printed on the facing page of the bulletin, centering on the invitation to next week’s Mission here from 3-5 p.m. Sunday. It is a wonderful opportunity to give yourself a gift this Lent. Come and bring your family!

(Confirmation students in grades 9-10 are required to attend the Mission as their February meeting. Don’t just drop them off-join in!)

On the journey together,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
