Return to Ordinary Time: Counting the Days With the Lord

With the conclusion of the Christmas season last week, we now enter into the season of Ordinary Time.  In Advent we prepare for the celebration of the Incarnation of the Lord in the Nativity, during Lent we prepare with acts of penance for Easter.  “Ordinary” Time does not mean ‘mundane’ or ‘commonplace’; rather, it refers to the days ‘numbered’ or ‘counted.’  The season lasts for 34 weeks, divided by the Lent and Easter seasons (beginning with Ash Wednesday).  So we have about a month of Ordinary Time before Lent begins.

As we count the days with the Lord, I invite you to consider joining us this Sunday, January 20th at 2:00 p.m. here in our church, for the First Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ecumenical Service of Hope.  This effort is sponsored by the Middlebury Christian Alliance, of which St. John of the Cross is a founding member in 2011-12.  This is a gathering of clergy and laity, representing all of the Christian churches here in town, with an effort to celebrate our common faith (in Baptism), and to improve the Middlebury community with outreach efforts to the needy.

Our representatives on the Middlebury Christian Alliance are Dr. Joseph Bizzozero, Corrina Flanagan, and Ron Vitarelli.  Each faith community has three representatives, along with their Pastor.  I am proud to say that St. John of the Cross hosted the first gathering one year ago.  The ‘word’ has been getting out slowly, as good news in the media often does.

Join us during this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity as we honor Dr. King.  The speaker will be the ever-vibrant Deacon Arthur Miller.  Deacon Art will preach at all of our Masses this Sunday.  A combined choir will provide music from the faith communities.  Refreshments will be served.

Come on along – bring your family.  There will be overflow seating in Father Fanning Hall, because we are an optimistic bunch!

Baptized into Christ,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
