From Fr. Dennis’ Desk

You stimulate us to take pleasure in praising You, because You have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless until they can find peace with You. – St. Augustine (4th cent.)

The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet. – Frederick Buechner

How often do we reflect on our Baptism?  I mean truly think deeply about it, pray about it, thank God for it? Maybe for some of us this may mean that we do not think about it at all, but for others it remains a deeply formational event.  During this Year of Faith, Deacons Mike and Steve and I have been reflecting on Baptism in our homilies, trying to tie all we do back to the waters of Baptism and the Eucharistic Table.

The Baptism of the Lord, which we celebrate today at the end of the Christmas season, reminds us of our call, our election (God’s choosing of us), and our transformation into Christ.  It is this deep gladness that springs forth from us – we are God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved.

Why would Jesus submit to Baptism, when one of the primary reasons we are baptized is to wash away original sin?  Jesus, we recall, is like us in every way except for sin.  Jesus allowed Himself to be baptized to sanctify the waters of Baptism for all of us and for every man, woman, and child who is embraced by God’s ‘deep gladness’ for us.

Savor your Baptism – be ever renewed by it…pray to our Triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) in thanksgiving!

United in love,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
