From Fr. Dennis’ Desk

This is the Glorious Day. . .

On which Christ Himself, the Savior of the world, appeared; the prophets foretold him, the angels worshipped Him;

The Magi saw His star and rejoiced to lay their treasures at His feet.

God’s holy day has dawned for us at last; Come, all you peoples, and adore the Lord.

What a wonderful antiphon, used by the holy Church down through the centuries to announce the depth of the joy of the Epiphany.  The word, epiphania, means “manifestation,” and the Christ Child is announced as the Savior of the world.  They traveled from afar, the magi, probably astrologers or wise men from the east.  We have ascribed them as kings, but there is no mention of that detail in the Scriptures.

It is not as important who they were, but what they carried and what they carried back with them.  They brought gifts for a King, and laid them at His feet.  They saw manifested before them the Savior—their world was radically changed.  Notice that they return by a different route, because they and the world will never be the same again.

What gifts do we bring to the Lord?  What gifts do we take with us from our profound encounter?

Happy New Year 2013,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
