Year of Faith:  A Call to Conversion

As of this writing our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, is convening a worldwide Synod of Cardinals, Bishops, priests, and lay people from around the world to open the Year of Faith.  A Synod is a special convocation or meeting of a wide array of people in the church to study an aspect of the faith or to set a new direction based on some tenet of the faith.  The last time a Year of Faith was declared was by Pope Paul VI in 1967, to commemorate Ss. Peter and Paul on the 19th centenary of their martyrdom.

Pope Benedict XVI chose to convene this Year of Faith in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council.  He called all Catholics to develop a deeper relationship with Christ, a conversion to Christ.  He uses the image of conversion as an opening of the “door of faith.”  This door was first opened at Baptism, but we must open it again and walk through it to be embraced anew by Christ.

The 20th century Brazilian priest who was martyred in 1976, Joao Bosco Bournier, wrote:  “The history of salvation is nothing more than the accumulation of the responses of individual men and women to the call of their Baptism.”

Here is a Family Prayer for the Year of Faith:

O God our Father, in Jesus you call all Christian families and homes to be signs of living faith.  By the light of the Holy Spirit, lead us to be thankful for the gift of faith, and by that gift may we grow in our relationship with Jesus, Your Son, and be confident witnesses to Christian hope and joy to all we meet.  In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

United in prayer

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
