From Fr. Dennis’ Desk

This Is My Father’s World

October is Respect Life month, and we embark on these autumn days with renewed fervor to pray for respect for life at all its stages.  There are many Catholics who, following society’s lead and the media’s promptings, have adopted a casual attitude about issues threatening life.  I have heard from Catholics who ignore the ‘radical teachings’ of Jesus and even adopt  a ‘pro-choice’ stance.  I think it is a matter of being ill-informed to turn away from the ‘seamless garment’ of Jesus.  We pray for the unborn in the womb, those at risk of euthanasia, those who languish under the cloud of capital punishment, the poor and the homeless, the  unemployed, and everywhere life is threatened.  Human dignity is not selective, reserved only for some.  All life, created in God’s image, is to be cherished.

This weekend we resume the Children’s Liturgy of the Word,  with our young people being dismissed to reflect on the Word of God at their level.  We have chosen a song to accompany them as they exit the church:  it  is called “This Is My Father’s World.”  We will play the melody during that time, and occasionally we will sing the lyrics:  ‘This is my Father’s world; Oh, let me ne’er forget that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.  This is my Father’s world; Why should my heart be sad? The Lord is king; let the heavens ring. God reigns; let the earth be glad.’

Let the heavens ring,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
