An Out of the Way Place

“Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while”    MK 6:31

Some older translations have Jesus inviting His disciples to “an out of the way place” to rest a while:  to escape from the hustle and bustle, to savor the quiet, and to let the Lord speak to our hearts.

This “out of the way place” can be as close as our own backyard, deck or pool.  It might be a special prayer chair or corner of our home.  My teenage niece has a prayer table, a vestige from her First Communion.

Whenever you can manage, allow yourself to commune with the Lord, get our of the way of distractions, and be with Him.  I find that this enhances my celebration of the Eucharist.  It may mean getting up a little earlier a few days a week, and praying while you enjoy morning coffee.  You may carry your Rosary or an inspirational book or your Kindle or iPad to meditate for a few minutes in the doctor’s office or at soccer practice.

Young people can accept Jesus’ advice as well.  Age appropriate prayers can be used around the family table.  When was the last time your middle school or younger child led grace before meals?

There is no perfect way to commune with the Lord.  It is as individual as we are.

Try it.  You might surprise yourself.

Blessings,

Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
