From Fr. Dennis’ Desk

Meet the New Parish Deacon

Hello everyone, it is with humility and great joy that I introduce myself in my new role in the parish.  My name is Stephen L. Savarese. Last month, just a few minutes before the ordination Mass was to begin, I learned from Archbishop Henry Mansell that he had assigned me to my home parish to serve as its new deacon.  I formally began my service with the parish on June 16, 2012 to serve along with Deacon Michael Walsh.  It was only two years ago that Deacon Mike learned in a similar way on the morning of his ordination that he was assigned to his home parish here at St. John of the Cross Church.  Many of you know me already as my family and I have been active members of the parish community for more than forty years.

My parents, Dr. Ed and Judy Savarese, moved with their four children to Middlebury in 1971.  I am the older brother of Kathleen Savarese Mucci, Dr. Michael Savarese and Carolyn Savarese Mucci. I attended Memorial Middle School, was an altar boy for Father Fanning, boy scout with Troop 444, and graduated with the Class of 1978 from Holy Cross High School in Waterbury.  Like my father and brother Mike, I am also a graduate of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.  However, rather than study medicine and become a physician like my grandfather, father and brother, I choose to study law, graduating with a Juris Doctorate from the American University in Washington D.C.  I have been happily married for 25 years to my wife Margaret (Meg) Ann Somervell, a native of Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Meg and I are parents to William, Annmarie and Elizabeth.  Meg has been a CCD teacher for the parish the past six years, most recently the 5th grade CCD at Long Meadow Elementary School. Our children have been active members of our parish as altar servers, junior choir members, CCD teacher assistants and peer ministers. It was my great privilege to have served in many roles in our parish before answering the call as a permanent deacon.

I have served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, a member of the Parish Council, the Stewardship Committee and as a member of the local council of the Knights of Columbus, including as Grand Knight.  An attorney in private practice, I have had an office in Newtown (just 17 miles west of my home on Breakneck Hill), for the past 21 years.  I recently completed four years as the appointed Town Counsel for my hometown of Middlebury.   I wish to take this opportunity to thank you all for your gracious welcome to me this past month.  I look forward to meeting with you again as I join Father Dennis, Deacon Mike, our parish staff and volunteers in helping you to know joy and a full life through the faith relations and encounters in our Church.  Please feel free to introduce yourselves that I may better know each of the members of our parish community.

May the Peace of our Lord be with you.

Deacon Steve
