Look at the Flag

(Really Look)

In preparation for Memorial Day, flags have unfurled along Whittemore Road and around many yards and homes.  There is a country tune that says, “When Old Glory flies, there’s a lot of men dead. . .”  Do we recognize this, fully, really?  Men and women throughout our nation’s history have unselfishly gone into battle, put on the uniform of the United States of America, and not come home to their families.

Look at that flag – not just pass by, but really look.  Is it possible that we sometimes take for granted the sacrifice of so many, that we fail to recognize their ultimate gift?  It is said that, throughout our country, one thousand members of the “Greatest Generation” die every day.  We see in the paper so many obituary flags – let us pray for them, for all veterans, and especially for those who died in war.

Middlebury’s war dead are remembered in the parade today, as well as all of the brave men and women down throughout our history.  As the names are read, let us offer a prayer as a nation.  We differ sometimes on issues which face our nation and Church – sometimes rancor out- shouts reason.

We should not differ on this one – praying for an end to war, praying for all those who protect the freedoms we enjoy, for all those who were wounded in combat, and for those who laid down their lives for us.

We remember.  Look at the flag.
