The Good Shepherd Beckons

“’A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep…I know mine and mine know me.’” We have this wonderful assurance from the 10th chapter of John’s Gospel that the Lord will never abandon us and will always lead us unto eternal life.

Our tradition marks Good Shepherd Sunday on the 4th Sunday of Easter: it is a time to reflect on the gracious love that the Lord has for us. How many times do we pray with this image? It is a central one for the young people receiving First Reconciliation, as they attached their pictures to the Good Shepherd who stands to guide them and protect them. Now, only two weeks before their First Holy Communion, they revisit the image in a rich way.

Just as the Father knows Jesus and He knows the Father, so it is with the special relationship with His sheep. He lays down His life for us, shedding His blood to keep us safe from the deadly wolves and all that would harm us.

Who have been shepherds in your life? Parents? Spouse? Children? Siblings? Friends? Who are those people who have guided you to a deeper relationship with God, by their example and love? Accepting us, loving us, caring for us, nurturing us; these are ones who truly show us the Good Shepherd. Maybe at today’s Mass we can praise God for the shepherds who have helped us to see God more clearly.

Why not thank them, with a note, a phone call, an e-mail (or a text!)? Better yet, why not turn to them in the pew beside you, or visit them – say thank you to the shepherds in your life.

You’ll be glad you did.

Yours in the Risen One,
Fr. Dennis J. Vincenzo
